Effective August 17, 2020, the School of Education Office will be open in Mercy Hall at the Dobbs Ferry Campus on a reduced schedule operated by rotating faculty and staff.

While we are still here to assist you in any way that we can, procedures this academic year will be operating differently than in the past.

While walk-ins are welcome, it is advisable that you make an appointment prior to coming to the School of Education Office to ensure that the individual you wish to see, or who can properly assist you, is in the Office that day. However, the scheduling of remote meetings, such as through Zoom, or phone conferences is strongly encouraged. Students may call the School of Education Office using the number below for general inquiries or e-mail the specific staff or faculty member they wish to contact to receive answers by e-mail, schedule a phone conference, or make arrangements to meet, either remotely or, if possible, in person.

As Interim Dean, I welcome you to the School of Education! Nelson Mandela once said, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." Here at Mercy College, our programs span the entire educational spectrum from early childhood through high school, including offerings in early childhood, childhood, secondary education, literacy, TESOL, bilingual education, special education, and educational leadership. We also offer a unique five-year program, so that if you are an undergraduate student, you can begin taking graduate classes before you graduate and earn a bachelor's and a master’s degree in five years.

Whether you are a pre-service or in-service teacher, you can pursue a first or even a second master’s degree. The School of Education is nationally accredited by both NCATE and CAEP, the first institution in the country to be so dually accredited.  All students will find a supportive home at the School of Education with our world-class faculty and supports for certification.

In 2020, our Early Childhood and Childhood MS programs were ranked # 10 by, #15 by with distinction for its birth-grade 2 focus, and ranked by as a "top pick." Our adolescence education MS program was recognized with distinction by for its urban school focus and ranked # 2 by the Guide to Online Schools. Our TESOL MS program and students with disabilities MS programs were each ranked # 3 by the Guide to Online Schools, while our educational leadership MS programs were ranked # 3 by In addition, our School of Education received overall recognition as an exceptional provider of online graduate education programs, ranking #4 on's 2020 Best Online Master's in Education Programs.

School of Education faculty also currently direct our innovative and widely-recognized Mercy College Center for STEM Education, and the college was recognized by the White House as a high-quality Hispanic serving institution.

A trailblazer in the field of education, the Mercy College School of Education made history by becoming the first institution in the United States to be awarded initial national accreditation by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and its successor organization, the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Professionals (CAEP). In addition, all of our master's degree education programs in Childhood, Early Childhood, Secondary Education (English, Mathematics, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, and Social Studies), Special Education, TESOL, Literacy, and Educational Leadership are nationally recognized by their professional associations. National accreditation provides a seal of approval for Mercy and enhances our graduates' credentials when seeking employment.

NYSED has announced a new, temporary certification pathway (Emergency COVID-19 Certificate) to assist all individuals facing difficulties in completing their certification tests due to complications related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Individuals who have completed their academic programs leading to certification prior to September 1, 2020, but who have not met all certification testing requirements for the certificate or extension they are seeking, are generally eligible for this temporary certificate.

Call for Third-Party Comments for CAEP Reaccreditation

The School of Education at Mercy College is hosting an accreditation visit by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) on December 6-8, 2020. Interested parties are invited to submit third-party comments to the site team. Please note that comments must address substantive matters related to the quality of professional education programs offered, and should specify the party's relationship to the provider (i.e., graduate, present or former faculty member, employer of graduates). We invite you to submit written testimony to:

Such comments must be within the specified period and based on the core tenets of CAEP accreditation standards of excellence, which recognize that:

--In CAEP's performance-based system, accreditation is based on evidence that demonstrates that teacher candidates know the subject matter and can teach it effectively so that students learn. In the CAEP system, EPPs must prove that candidates can connect theory to practice and be effective in an actual P-12 classroom.

--A professional education provider that is accredited by CAEP is expected to be involved in ongoing planning and evaluation; engaged in continuous assessment and development; ensure that faculty and programs reflect new knowledge, practice, and technologies; and be involved in continuous development in response to the evolving world of education and educational reform.

--Comments must address substantive matters related to the quality of professional education programs offered, and should specify the respondent's relationship, if any, to the institution (i.e., graduate, present or former faculty member, employer of graduates). Copies of all correspondence received will be sent to the university for comment prior to the review. No anonymous testimony will be considered.
