FCTL Policies

The Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning (FCTL) is located on the first floor behind the circulation desk. This is a temporary location. The new entrance to the FCTL room is accessed by turning left past the circulation desk, and turning left before entering the Center for Academic Excellence and Innovation (CAEI/ the Learning Center).  You’ll find the new FCTL Room entrance in the library gallery.  Signs will be posted. It is a space dedicated to faculty collaboration, resources, and community, consistent with FCTL’s mission.

The room is open and available to faculty during regular hours of the Library Learning Commons from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. The Center is available for use outside those hours by asking the staff at the library circulation desk to unlock the Center’s door. The door is kept locked after hours to protect the Center’s resources.

The Center is an ideal space for having conversations with other faculty, for reflection, and for using a computer (scan, print, etc). The professional staff of the Office for Teaching Excellence and Engaged Learning and the Faculty-In-Residence conduct faculty consultations in the Center, but faculty may feel free to enter and take advantage of the facility. You can create presentations, do research, check out FCTL resources, and/or create a poster for a conference presentation. You can even have a free cup of coffee (though you must make it yourself).

The Center is available to provide space for faculty to explore teaching and learning resources and collaborations. The Center is available only to faculty. No student meetings may be conducted in the space.

The room is reserved at posted times for meetings of Faculty Learning Communities. This schedule changes each semester but is posted. There is a two-hour time limit on FLC meetings in the FCTL space.

A calendar is posted daily on the Center’s door indicating any scheduled meetings and operations. During times scheduled for faculty learning communities, the Center is available, but please be mindful to not disturb the meeting. Small groups of faculty may reserve the conference table for specific times. This is useful for a working session to create a presentation at the table. The rest of the room remains open for general use.

To reserve the conference table, send an email to You will receive a confirmation and a reserved tent will be placed on the table. If you need a FCTL laptop, include that in your request. 


In the Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning space you can:

  • Borrow one of the 15 Dell Latitude laptops available for check out.
    • Loner laptops are available through the Library Learning Commons (LLC)
    • Details are available at the Circulation Desk in the LLC
  • Access to Mercy College’s Mavericks-WiFi Network
  • Meet informally to collaborate with other faculty
  • Relax on one of the two sofas
  • Fix yourself a cup of coffee or tea from the “Kurig One-Cup” coffee maker

During a FCTL event there are 15 folding chairs for additional seating (25 maximum capacity).


The Center offers a conference table that seats up to 10 with built-in ports for access to Internet, electrical power and LCD display. In addition, the facility offers:

  • A Sharp 50” wide screen HD LCD display with remote and VGA adaptor for PC connection
  • Two Dell Desktop PC workstations
  • Two 20” iMac workstations with built in iSight web camera
  • Canon BW laser printer and scanner
  • Logitech Webcam C500 for web conferencing
  • Logitech Clear Chat Comfort Headset for web conferencing


On both of the 20” iMacs are running Mac OS 10.6, with the following:

  • iLife ’09 Suite: iPhoto, iMovie, Garage Band, iWeb, and iDVD
  • Microsoft Office 2010: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Entourage
  • Adobe Creative Suite 4:  Web Design Edition:  Dreamweaver, Flash, Fireworks, InDesign, and Illustrator

On both of the Dell PC workstations:

  • Microsoft Office suite: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access
  • Adobe Acrobat Extended: A new program that creates rich, engaging PDF communications anytime, anywhere
  • Adobe Presenter: A PowerPoint add-on that creates video, voice-overs, demos, and interactive quizzes in your presentations.
