Step # Steps Required Application Deadlines for Spring Study Abroad Application Deadline for Fall Study Abroad
1 Complete the Mercy College application for study abroad at October 1 March 15
2 Review your financial aid package for the semester you will study abroad. Speak to your adviser to increase package if needed. Tuition will be paid to Mercy College. You are responsible for living expenses and fees at host university (for example, room and board). October 15 April 1
3 If you are living on campus, you must give Residential Life advanced notice that you will be leaving to study abroad in order to reserve your room for the semester you return.  December 1 Need to re-apply for Spring returning
4 Review your Degree Audit with your adviser and make a list of courses that you need in order to graduate from Mercy College. Select courses from the host university's catalog that meet the requirements for your major or courses that meet your Gen Ed or elective requirements.  November 1 April 15
5 Select at least 6-8 courses that you could take. Complete the Permission for Transfer of Credits form and submit to the Center for Global Engagement. Make sure you select classes that are at least 6 ECTS when credits are given in ECTS. Be mindful of host university application, registration and clearance deadlines. December 1 May 1
6 Make sure you have a passport and travel and medical insurance before you leave for study abroad. This is required to obtain a Visa for the host country. Your passport must be valid for 6 months past the period of intended study abroad. (For example, if you are returning to the U.S. on January 4 your passport needs to expire on or after July 4). December 1 May 15
7 If you do not have health insurance for international travel, the College has insurance available through iNext for approximately $125 for the semester. Contact for more information.  December 1 June 1
8 Enroll in the U.S. State Department STEP program. Complete the application found at and the FERPA form. December 1 May 1
9 Submit the required forms - Emergency Contact Information form, Notarized Mercy College waiver, Health Clearance form, Specialist Report, and copy of your passport - to the Center for Global Engagement. December 1 April 15
10 Obtain a visa from the host country's Consulate in NYC or as is located in the region of your home address. One month before departure One month before departure
