Dr. Walley earned a doctorate in Counselor Education, specializing in adolescent mental health, from Old Dominion University, Norfolk Virginia and a master’s degree in Counseling from Augusta State University. Her undergraduate degree is in Psychology from Loyola University New Orleans.
Teaching
As a counselor educator and professional counselor with attention to multiculturalism within teaching, research, and advising, Dr. Walley has taught a variety of CACREP core area courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels both to traditional and non-traditional age students of diverse backgrounds. In addition to teaching, Dr. Walley has provided individual and group supervision for practicum and internship students in various counseling programs (e.g., School Counseling, Community/ Mental Health Counseling). She believes it is imperative to focus on multicultural aspects with students in order to broaden their perspectives about the counseling process as well as the training/clinical relationship. In addition, Dr. Walley believes in using creative methods to connect with students and explain key concepts of the counseling process and various philosophies to allow students to construct their knowledge. She has facilitated play therapy workshops to students and professionals as part of a nine-month series of play therapy training as well.
Research
Dr. Walley’s research interests are child and adolescent mental health issues and school counseling. Specifically, she is interested in creative arts in counseling, child and adolescent mental health, counselor preparation, and college counseling. In addition, she was involved in a program evaluation involving the development and implementation of the Promoting Healthy Relationships Seminar for counselors and counselor trainees, as well as a collaborative research project/workshop pertaining to healthy relationships for adolescent females. Dr. Walley prior manuscripts pertain to adolescent substance abuse, adolescent dating violence, and mental health role of school counselors.
Service
Dr. Walley has been involved in various counseling organizations and groups. She has experience developing and facilitating Chi Sigma Iota, counseling honor society, chapters. In addition, she was the 2010-2012 Membership Chair for North Atlantic Region Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (NARACES). In addition, Dr. Walley has been a site reviewer for the Council for Accreditation of Counseling Related Education Programs (CACREP) since 2009 and has been on several accreditation site visits examining school and mental health counseling programs. Her state level leadership involves being the current Co- President of the New York State Association for Counselor Education and Supervision. In addition, because of her interest and passion in counseling, she has been involved in the state regulation changes for school counseling as a member of the New York State School Counselor Advisory Board and School Counseling Summit.
