Speech-language pathologists are part of the team of medical professionals working with patients with malignancies of the head and neck.  SLPs require specialized knowledge and training to provide appropriate care with this population. This workshop promises both practical knowledge and application information regarding staging, current oncologic treatments, deficits that often result from these treatments, and communication/swallowing therapeutic and management strategies. Laurie will include case studies to broaden your current knowledge and patient volunteers will discuss their patient experiences.

 Laurie Wennerholm is a clinical specialist in swallowing disorders with 22 years of experience working with patients with head and neck cancer, voice restoration and swallowing disorders in head and neck cancer patients, specifically those with total laryngectomy. She is a well known and sought after lecturer and adjunct professor on this topic. Laurie is a Senior Speech-Language Pathologist at the White Plains Hospital Center for Cancer Care where she works on a multidisciplinary team of professionals caring for patients with complex head and neck malignancies. She is a Board Certified Specialist in Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders. Currently, she is enrolled in a Ph.D. program with the University of Queensland conducting research regarding optimal care pathways for patients with total laryngectomy in order to improve care and quality of life for this special population.
