Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. – May 15, 2014– Mercy College will host a special screening of the film “Band of Sisters” – a film that features Mercy’s Sr. Theresa Kane. The film tells the story of Catholic nuns and their work for social justice in the 1960s after Vatican II. Kane was one of the many nuns who worked for equality in the church.

 Kane started out as a Sister of Mercy and quickly moved into various leadership positions in her congregation. In 1979, as head of The Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR), Kane publically confronted Pope John Paul II during his visit to Washington D.C. She spoke to him directly, in front of a large audience, about women’s roles in the church.    Kane specifically addressed the suffering of women who were denied equality and a voice in the church. Kane’s advocacy is prominently featured in the film. 

Kane remains a women’s rights advocate is also an associate professor in the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences and the School of Liberal Arts; she teaches a graduate class on health services management and a religion class.
