The recurring theme throughout my work has been the study of international protest movements. I have investigated political subjectivity among social activists from a phenomenological perspective, and conducted fieldwork among anti-globalization protesters in Southern Italy and North Korean defectors in South Korea. Recent work uses artificial intelligence to look at protest movements in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and elsewhere. I have been experimenting with specifically designed computer programs to correlate patterns in protestors’ online behavior with real-world events. This situates my research at the crossroads of political anthropology, digital humanities, and international studies. The work engages anthropology with big data analytics, while providing relevant policy recommendations for the wider business/government community.
