B.S. Biological SciencesDr. Meghan Marrero is Professor of Secondary Science Education at Mercy College and co-Director of the Mercy College Center for STEM Education. She was a Fulbright Scholar to Ireland in 2018, where she focused on teaching and research around family learning in science and engineering for early childhood students and their families.
While studying biology and marine science as an undergraduate at Cornell University, Meghan spent a semester at sea, sailing up the East Coast with her classmates on a wooden schooner. Since then, she has earned Master’s and doctoral degrees in Science Education from Teachers College, Columbia University, focusing both theses on educating students about the ocean and its importance in the Earth System. She served as President of the New York State Marine Education Association (NYSMEA) from 2009-2014, and President of the National Marine Educators Association (NMEA) in 2018-19.
Meghan currently directs the $1.45 million NSF-funded Mercy College Intensive STEM Teacher Initiative (MISTI) program and co-directs the $1.5 million Greater New York Wipro Science Education Fellowship. She also serves as co-PI on the $1.5 million NSF-funded Mercy College STEM Master Teacher Fellow Program. Her research interests include marine education and STEM teacher professional development. She has authored many peer reviewed articles and book chapters, and edited both journals and books. Meghan is lead author of a high school marine science textbook entitled, "Marine Science: The Dynamic Ocean." Here at Mercy, Meghan teaches courses in science teaching methods, educational assessment, oceanography, and teacher leadership. She also supports teacher candidates by serving as a seminar leader for student teaching.
